If you live in a block of flats or a shared household you may have a communal TV system, designed to provide a signal to several homes from a single aerial. An integrated reception system, or Fibre IRS system, is a way of providing digital TV to different areas of a communal building, for example, a block of flats or a care home. A Sky Communal TV system works for the entire building and allows anyone in any flat to get Sky. To see if your block of flats already has a communal system, call Sky or your building's property management to find out. Sky Q can also be added to a communal system by adding another multi-switching unit.
Communal systems and SMATV (Small Antenna Television) have differences. The main difference is the ability for SMATV to receive digital satellite signals, increasing the viewing possibilities. SMATV systems are ideal for large occupancy buildings, such as hotels, schools and colleges and communal buildings such as blocks of flats and office buildings.
