Usk has a long and varied history as a penal establishment, opening in 1844 as a House of Correction. In 1870 after the addition of other buildings, it becomes the county goal for monmouthshire. It remained in that role untill 1922 when it closed, reopening in 1939 as a losed borstal and coninued in that role until 1964 when it became a Detention Centre. In 1983 Usk became a Youth Custody Centre and from 1988 to 1990 a YOI. In may 1990 it becae an Adult Cat C stablisment for Vulnerable Prisoners and continues in that role today.
One Vision have installed a system which has allowed the prison to lock TV channels so that it cant be changed unless changed by the engineer who has installed the unit. The unit used in this job is the Triax CSE headend. This is the same as what was used in Swansea and Cardiff but in older model.
